Induction is the least mechanical cooking surface in the kitchen and the most electronic. Under the glass there is a coil for each zone, a power board that drives it at high frequency, a control board reading the touch surface, and a fan whose only job is keeping the electronics below their limit. There are no burners, no igniters and no gas. Nearly every fault is either a supply problem, a detection problem or a heat problem — and the third is by far the most common.
Zones that cut out after a few minutes
This is the call we take most often, and it is very rarely the coil. An induction cooktop generates real waste heat in its power electronics, and it dumps that heat with a fan drawing air from the cabinet below. When the electronics run past their thermal limit the cooktop protects itself by dropping power or shutting the zone down. It comes back once it cools, which is why the fault seems intermittent and why it is always worse on the third dish rather than the first.
The obstruction is usually not inside the appliance. It is a drawer packed to the back, a spice rack sitting against the intake, or a filler panel added during a remodel that closed off the vent path the installer relied on. In a Jacksonville kitchen that runs the oven and the cooktop together on a July evening, a marginal air path becomes a failing one.
Before we open anything, we clear the cabinet, run the surface hard, and watch where the air actually goes. That test alone resolves a meaningful share of these visits.
Pan detection
Induction only heats ferrous cookware, and the cooktop decides whether a pan qualifies by looking at how the coil loads. Three things change that judgement over time.
The pan itself changes. A tri-ply base that has warped away from the glass — usually from being run empty or cooled under a tap — loses contact and can drop below the detection threshold on a large zone while still working on a small one. That is a good diagnostic in itself: if a pan is detected on one zone and not on another, suspect the pan and the zone size, not the electronics.
The zone changes. A power board that is partly failed will often still detect a heavy pan and refuse a light one.
And the surface changes. A film of burnt sugar between the pan and the glass is thin, but it is a physical gap, and on a marginal pan it matters.
Touch controls
Capacitive controls read a change in capacitance through the glass. Water on the surface reads as a finger, which is why a wet cooktop either does nothing or does something you did not ask for. Salt and oil residue behave the same way. Dry the panel, wipe it properly, and try again before assuming a board.
Genuine control failures usually announce themselves differently: the panel responds in one region and is completely dead in another, or the whole thing comes up and then locks out. That pattern is a board or a ribbon connection.
Cracked glass
Ceramic glass is strong in compression and unforgiving of point impact. A dropped pepper mill, a jar corner, a pan set down hard on an edge — any of those can start a hairline that then runs with the next thermal cycle. A cracked induction surface is not a cosmetic problem. Liquid reaching the coil and the power board underneath turns a glass replacement into a much larger one, so a cooktop with a visible crack should be taken out of use.
Storms and supply
Jacksonville averages around 68 thunderstorm days a year, and induction is the cooking appliance least tolerant of what that does to a supply.
