A 48-Inch Range in a 1926 Kitchen
Clearance, gas diameter and a dedicated circuit — the three things that decide whether a range in an old house lasts twenty years or twelve.
Jacksonville’s historic belt — Riverside, Avondale, Old Ortega, San Marco and the older stretch of Mandarin along the river — has some of the most attractive housing in the state and some of the least accommodating kitchens. The rooms were laid out between roughly 1900 and 1930 for a freestanding stove around 30 to 40 inches wide, a pantry, and a service porch nobody uses that way any more.
Putting a 48-inch professional range into one of those rooms is a construction project that happens to end with an appliance. Here is what actually decides whether it goes well.
Clearance is not the same as width
The most common mistake we find is an opening measured to the appliance’s nominal width. A range needs its stated cut-out, which is not its body width, and it needs the side and rear clearances the manufacturer specifies to adjacent combustible material.
When those clearances are skipped — and in a 1920s kitchen with framing nobody wants to move, they get skipped often — the range works. That is the problem. It works, and it runs warmer than it was designed to for the whole of its service life, and the parts that mind are the ones sitting in the hottest air: the control board above the cavity, the wiring loom behind the liner, the igniter modules.
What that looks like years later is an appliance that fails early without any single dramatic cause. When we open a fifteen-year-old range in Riverside and find a board that should have had another decade in it, the install is usually the reason. It is not recoverable after the fact, and it is very cheap to get right on the day.
If your opening genuinely will not give you the clearance, that is an argument for a narrower range, not for fitting the wide one tightly.
Gas: the meter is not the run
Plenty of houses in these neighbourhoods have had the meter upgraded. Far fewer have had the pipe from the meter to the back of the kitchen replaced.
A long run of undersized pipe holds perfectly normal pressure with nothing drawing on it. Put a 48-inch range at full output on the end of it — several burners and an oven simultaneously — and the pressure at the appliance sags. The symptom is unmistakable once you know it: everything is fine one or two burners at a time and misbehaves when the kitchen is actually busy.
This gets misdiagnosed as a component fault constantly, because at the moment the technician tests any individual burner, it works. Ask the installer to confirm the run is sized for the appliance’s total input, not just that gas arrives.
The circuit almost nobody specifies
Every modern range needs electrical power, including an all-gas one. Ignition, controls, the display, the convection fan and the door lock all run on it.
In a 1920s house that power usually comes off whatever kitchen circuit is nearest, shared with a refrigerator, a microwave, and a counter full of small appliances. Control electronics are more sensitive to supply quality than most owners expect, and on a loaded shared circuit they produce intermittent faults that look exactly like a failing board: a display that resets, a cycle that aborts, an ignition sequence that stalls.
A dedicated 20-amp circuit for the range is the single best-value item in a historic-kitchen remodel in this city. It costs a fraction of a control board and it prevents a category of fault rather than fixing one.
Dual fuel and induction change the requirement entirely — those need a dedicated high-amperage 240-volt supply, and in a house whose service panel dates from a previous renovation that is a real conversation to have before the appliance is ordered, not after it is delivered.
Ventilation, and the historic district
Getting a duct out of a kitchen at the back of one of these houses means going through plaster, through original framing, and out through an exterior wall — and in Riverside, Avondale and parts of San Marco, exterior alterations to older properties can fall under the city’s historic preservation review.
The consequence is predictable. Ducts get routed the long way, upward and across, with an elbow at every obstruction and occasionally a reduction in diameter somewhere in the attic. The hood then underperforms from the day it is commissioned, and no blower change will rescue it.
Plan the duct before you choose the hood. If the run has to be long, size the duct up rather than the blower.
Floors, and getting it in the room
Two practical notes. Heart pine floors in these houses are beautiful and they dent; a 48-inch range is heavy enough to mark one permanently on the way in. And the doorways are narrow — measure the path from the street to the opening, not just the opening.
If it is already installed badly
Not everything is fixable retroactively, but some of it is. A dedicated circuit can be run. A gas line can be replaced. Clearance sometimes can be recovered by modifying an adjacent cabinet rather than the framing. It is worth knowing which of the three you are living with, because that tells you what is going to fail and roughly when.
