The Data Plate and the Part That Fits

Two numbers on a metal tag decide whether the part is on the van tomorrow or ordered next week.

Every call we take starts with the same request, and it is not bureaucracy. We want the model number and the serial number off the data plate, because together they tell us more about your appliance than any description of the symptom can.

Why both numbers

The model number tells us what the appliance is. The serial number tells us when it was built, and that second fact is the one that decides whether we arrive with the right part.

Manufacturers revise parts within a model’s production life. A control board, a valve, an igniter or a door hinge can change part number partway through a run without the model designation changing at all, usually because a supplier changed or a revision fixed a known weakness. Two ranges with identical model numbers, four years apart, can take different boards.

So a model number alone gets us to roughly the right part. Model plus serial gets us to the right one. On an appliance where the board is the single most expensive component, that difference is worth the two minutes it takes to find the tag.

Where the plate is

It is a metal or foil tag, usually stamped or printed, and it is always somewhere you have to open or move something to see.

Freestanding and slide-in ranges. Most often behind the kick panel at the bottom front, or on the frame inside the left-hand door jamb — open the oven door and look along the vertical edge of the opening. Some are under the cooktop, which means lifting the surface.

Wall ovens. Open the door and look at the frame along the left or right side of the opening, near the hinge. On a double oven, check both cavities; the plate is usually on the upper one and it covers the whole appliance.

Rangetops and cooktops. Underneath, which usually means opening the cabinet below and looking up at the chassis. On some installations it is on a bracket at the front edge, visible without removing anything.

Ventilation hoods. Take the filters out. The plate is generally on the inside of the canopy behind them, sometimes on the blower housing itself.

Steam ovens. Behind the door on the frame, or behind or beside the water reservoir once it is withdrawn.

Photograph it rather than transcribing it. Model numbers on these appliances mix letters and digits in ways that are easy to mistype, and a phone picture in good light removes the whole problem. Then keep the picture. You will want it again.

While you are down there

Two other things are worth noting at the same time.

On a gas appliance, the plate normally states the gas type it is configured for. If a range has moved house with its owner, or been converted between natural gas and propane at some point, that is where the record of it lives. A conversion done with the orifices swapped but the air shutters never readjusted produces a chronically rich flame, and the plate is the first clue.

The plate also carries the electrical rating. On a historic-kitchen install that has never had a dedicated circuit, comparing what the appliance asks for against what it is actually connected to explains a surprising number of intermittent faults.

Why we insist on OEM

Once we know exactly which part your appliance takes, we fit that part.

On cooking appliances this is less about brand loyalty than about calibration. An oven’s control logic assumes the resistance curve of the original temperature probe and the wattage of the original element. Fit a generic element that draws slightly differently and the oven will hold a temperature perfectly stably — just not the temperature on the dial, and not the same one at every setting.

Gas parts are worse. Burner heads, caps and orifices are matched to a specific gas type and a specific input rating. A near-enough orifice gives you a near-enough flame, a shifted air-to-gas ratio, and eventually soot on your pans.

What to have ready when you call

The model number, the serial number, a plain description of what the appliance does and when it started doing it, and — if it applies — what happened just before. A storm, a self-clean cycle, a boil-over, a remodel. That sequence is frequently the diagnosis.
